Peer Review Process

Manuscripts submitted to The Canadian Field-Naturalist are normally sent for evaluation to an Associate Editor (who reviews it or asks another qualified person to do so) and at least one other reviewer who is a specialist in the field, chosen by the Editor or Associate Editor. Authors are encouraged to suggest names of three suitable referees. Reviewers are asked to give a general appraisal of the manuscript followed by specific comments and constructive recommendations. Almost all manuscripts accepted for publication have undergone revision - sometimes extensive revision and reappraisal. The Editor makes the final decision on whether a manuscript is acceptable for publication, and in so doing aims to maintain the scientific quality, content, overall high standards and consistency of style, of our joumal. Our journal's Ethics Statement is available as a pdf file, describing expectations of authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher.

Publication Frequency

The Canadian Field-Naturalist publishes four issues per volume, and one volume per year. Online content is identical to printed issues, with the exception that any supplementary material associated with articles is online only.

Author Self-Archiving

While the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club typically retains copyright to articles, authors are permitted to post items published in our journal on personal websites or institutional repositories after publication, as long a proper citation to The Canadian Field-Naturalist (with year, volume, and page numbers) accompanies the article. We also ask that you include a link to the journal webpage with your article's abstract.

Delayed Open Access

The contents of this journal will be available in an open access format 12 month(s) after an issue is published.

We provide a variety of subscription options for individuals and institutions, in print or online format.  Our online content requires a subscription for the four most recent issues; all issues older than this are freely available.
